South Africa’s pioneering role in proximity detection systems (PDS) has created opportunities for Booyco Electronics to expand its footprint across the region, says Booyco Electronics CEO Anton Lourens.

South Africa introduced a regulation in December 2022 under Mine Health and Safety Act, No 29 of 1996, that enforces the inclusion of PDS on trackless mobile machinery to avoid accidents involving other vehicles, pedestrians and objects.

Lourens discusses some of the key safety and operational benefits that mines in Southern Africa are realising by adopting proven PDS technologies from South Africa in a video interview at this year’s Investing in African Mining Indaba.

With varying compliance standards and local requirements across the region, Booyco Electronics ensures that its PDS solutions are both effective and adaptable.

The company’s approach to skills transfer and local support has been central to its expansion strategy. Lourens elaborates on how this model supports the long-term success of Booyco Electronics’ PDS deployments.

The company has encountered unique challenges when introducing PDS technology in less experienced mining regions, but Booyco Electronics has leveraged these challenges to create opportunities for regional growth and innovation.
