Ahead of the Investing in African Mining Indaba, mine safety original-equipment manufacturer Booyco Electronics emphasises the critical role of collaboration in advancing proximity detection systems (PDS) across Africa.

CEO Anton Lourens tells Mining Weekly that collaboration among mining companies, manufacturers and technology partners is essential for efficient PDS deployment, particularly for operations that lack comprehensive PDS implementation according to mandatory Level 9 vehicle intervention regulations.

Collaboration helps in identifying the best fit for evolving technologies and integrating them into PDS solutions – without needing to reinvent the wheel.

As a recognised leader in PDS, Booyco Electronics has developed advanced systems capable of seamless integration across diverse mining operations. The greater challenge, however, lies in the mines’ ability to integrate PDS effectively within their operational frameworks.

Change management is often a barrier to PDS adoption, Lourens points out, explaining that successful PDS deployments involve staff being part of the adoption and implementation journey. “A structured change management process helps people understand the technology, its limitations and the benefits of PDS.”

Lourens mentions another crucial contributor to effective PDS deployment being accurate and up-to-date baseline risk assessments, as well as traffic management plans. These form the foundation for comprehensive PDS interventions.

He suggests that mines embed PDS into their broader risk mitigation strategies, ensuring the technology complements rather than disrupts existing systems and production flows.

“Operational readiness requires leadership commitment, structured change management and extensive communication to foster understanding of system functionality and value.”

Lourens concludes that by complementing technical excellence with stakeholder collaboration, Booyco Electronics continues to set the benchmark for safety technology in mining, enabling operations to meet regulatory requirements and achieve genuine advances in collision avoidance.
