Name of the Project
Moa Joint Venture (JV) nickel/cobalt mine expansion project.
Location
Moa, in Cuba, and Fort Saskatchewan, in Alberta, Canada.
Project Owner/s
Moa JV, a 50:50 JV between Sherritt and General Nickel Company.
Project Description
The project aims to capitalise on the growing demand for high-purity nickel and cobalt, driven by the accelerated adoption of electric vehicles.
The life-of-mine at Moa will be extended beyond 2040 through the conversion of mineral resources into reserves using an economic cutoff grade.
Expansion plans for the Moa JV comprises a multiphased approach and includes:
- completion of the new slurry preparation plant and other expansion circuits at Moa;
- installation of new equipment and upgrading existing equipment at the refinery in Fort Saskatchewan;
- updating the NI 43-101 technical report, published in June 2019, which reported more than 158-million tonnes of measured and indicated resources at 1% nickel and 0.13% cobalt, to reflect production based on economic rather than a fixed, cutoff grade; and
- leveraging the expertise of Sherritt Technologies to optimise mine planning and performance.
