What started in a small backyard garage in 1948 has grown into a global leader in innovation and industry. Founded by Andrew Mentis, what is now simply known as Mentis, has spent 75 years pushing boundaries, solving challenges and delivering world-class solutions. It’s a story of resilience, dedication and groundbreaking achievements.

Where it all Started

Mentis’ journey began in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, where he designed and built precision-engineered equipment for acetylene welding and hydraulic systems. His knack for solving problems quickly got him noticed, and by the early 1950s, he had secured a major contract for the Sasol One project. With a shortage of high-quality steel gratings in the country, Mentis took on the challenge, creating a manufacturing process that met the project’s needs. By the end, he had delivered 2 500 t of grating and laid the foundation for what would become a thriving business.

This initial success set Mentis on a path to specialise in steel floor gratings and expanded metal. Over time, products like Rectagrid, a patented grating system, redefined standards for efficiency and precision in the industry.

Pioneering Industrial Excellence

By the late 1970s, Mentis had established its first large-scale factory in Elandsfontein and introduced an advanced production line for fusion-welded grating. This made Mentis one of the most versatile grating manufacturers globally, with a capacity of over 10 000 t/m. The company dominated the South African market and began expanding internationally.

Key milestones

  • 1976: Winning an export award for excellence.
  • 1980s: Launching a broader product range, including handrail stanchions and road restraint systems.
  • 1990s: Expanding into international markets and securing patents in multiple countries.
  • 1998: Establishment of Ambrosia Citrus Farm.
  • 2012: Mentis expanded its operation into Australia.

Transformations in the 2000s and 2010s

The 2000s were a transformative time for Mentis, marked by significant growth and a renewed focus on sustainability. Partnering with international industry leaders, the company invested in waste reduction and energy-efficient technologies, solidifying its reputation as a forward-thinking and environmentally responsible industry leader.

The momentum carried into the 2010s, as Mentis fully embraced advanced technologies. The introduction of industrial-scale 3D printing cemented its Additive Manufacturing Division, enabling the company to deliver customised, cost-effective solutions to industries like construction and transport.

In 2012, the company expanded internationally by acquiring Australian firm R&R Engineering followed by Rhino Grating in 2016 (now trading as Mentis Australia). These moves strengthened its presence in the Asia-Pacific region and paved the way for the launch of Mentis International, a global trading arm that has made Mentis products highly sought after across industries worldwide.

In 2024, Mentis purchased Macrack, a 40-year-old family-owned business based in Brisbane, in Australia, specialising in Australian manufactured, customised warehouse racking and storage solutions.

Mentis has also had remarkable success in agriculture. Alongside being South Africa’s largest producer of blueberries, thanks to a partnership with Driscoll’s, the company has enhanced its citrus operations, producing premium-quality lemons, oranges and grapefruits. These efforts have opened doors to premium markets, such as Europe, China and the US.

This agricultural growth also creates thousands of seasonal jobs, particularly for women in disadvantaged communities. By combining modernisation with meaningful social impact, Mentis has cemented its place as a leader in both local and international markets.

Commitment to Sustainability and Community

Sustainability is a cornerstone of Mentis’ operations. The company integrates environmentally responsible practices, such as shaded netting and drip irrigation in agriculture, to reduce resource consumption while maintaining productivity.

Mentis also prioritises community impact, creating jobs and fostering skills development. Collaborations with tribal authorities and regional organisations ensure that the company’s operations benefit local communities while delivering lasting social and economic value.

Celebrating 75 Years of Excellence

Marking 75 years is both a celebration of the past and a vision for the future. Mentis honours its heritage while embracing new opportunities to shape industries worldwide. Guided by the principles of stability, adaptability and innovation, the company is poised for continued success.

Andrew Mentis’ commitment to excellence, combined with the dedication of countless employees and partners, has ensured that it remains a trusted name in industries around the world.

Here’s to 75 years strong – and many more to come.
