Alcoa sees higher aluminum shipments in 2025 despite looming tariff threats

Alcoa, the largest US aluminium producer, expects higher annual shipments of the lightweight metal in 2025 due to rising demand for the material used in everything from automobiles to window frames.

The Pittsburgh-based producer said it expects aluminum shipments to be between 2.6-million and 2.8-million tons this year, outpacing the 2.59-million tons shipped in 2024, according to a Wednesday statement.

Alcoa’s earnings come as aluminum markets face potential disruptions to global trade and supply, with the European Union considering import restrictions of the metal from Russia and President Donald Trump threatening wide-ranging tariffs on foreign goods brought into the US. Alcoa has plants in the US and Canada, as well as operations in Australia, Brazil and throughout Europe.

The company, which produces a large amount of the metal in Canadian mills, was vocally opposed to US tariffs in 2018 when the first Trump administration imposed duties. Canada has been exempt from US aluminum tariffs for years and a revival of US trade restrictions is expected to make the metal more costly for American buyers.

Shares of Alcoa rose as much as 5.7% after the close of regular trading in New York.
