Capstone restores full output at Mantoverde after motor failure
Canadian miner Capstone Copper has resumed full sulphide copper production at its Mantoverde mine in Chile, following repairs to a ball mill motor that had left the site running at half capacity earlier this month.
On September 1, Capstone reported that a second motor failure had constrained output at Mantoverde, reducing production by an estimated 3 000 t to 4 000 t of copper in concentrate while repairs were completed. The mine was forced to operate by bypassing one of its two ball mills – a configuration it had used previously – after the breakdown on August 30.
The Vancouver-based company said at the time that it would mitigate the impact by advancing planned maintenance and investigating the cause of the failures, while also preparing a long-term replacement and repair strategy.
Capstone confirmed on Thursday that full operating rates had now been restored, though five days of planned maintenance at Mantoverde are still scheduled for later in September.
