CSIR working on multitude of new innovations for the mining industry, using world-class capabilities
CSIR executive cluster manager Sibongile Ntsoelengoe tells us more at this year's #MiningIndaba2022
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s (CSIR’s) mining cluster team is working on a multitude of new innovative solutions for the mining industry s and as their building world class capabilities in cutting edge technologies .
In line with this, CSIR executive cluster manager Sibongile Ntsoelengoe says that the CSIR has recently developed the Digital Twin for collision prevention of Trackless Mobile Machinery (TMM), which is a safety profiling tool for TMMs in open pit and underground mining operations.
The TMM Digital Twin, she explains, “provides detailed safety risk profiling information for the interaction TMMs as they are used in operations , with an additional focus on productivity, which allows for effective decision support”.
This Digital Twin falls in line with the CSIR’s objective to provide value added solutions as well as technical advisory services, among others, within the environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) spheres (such as decarbonisation), circular economy, new innovative technologies for mining such as and, digital and automation, big data analytics and predictive modelling underpinned by appropriate cyber security solutions .
The independent entity isn’t aligned to any specific original-equipment manufacturer or technology stack and can therefore provide “the most applicable and relevant technology recommendations and use the best technology for the challenge being faced”.
The CSIR, which has been “quite thoughtful” around the new normal following the Covid-19 pandemic, has multiple campuses in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Stellenbosch, and Durban.
