De Beers Voorspoed Mine congratulates the Free State Department of Education achieving 89% matric pass rate and being crowned the best-performing province for four consecutive years. The Free State province is also among the top five leading districts nationally, with Motheo District Municipality obtaining a 91.2% pass rate.

The Mine has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with the province’s Department of Education through its educational support programme, which has assisted the Department through infrastructure and educational support throughout the years.

One of De Beers’ educational interventions that has benefited matriculants in the Free State is the Maths and Science programme which supports leaners and educators from 22 high schools across the province.

The three-month Maths and Science education programme which is sponsored by Voorspoed Mine in partnership with the Free State Department of Education, offers work revision and practical lessons, and inspires the learners to achieve good results in subjects like Physical and Life Sciences, Maths, Accounting and Business studies. The mine also pays for the educator’s salaries and provides laptops to the top performing learners in the province.

The total amount spent towards the programme for 2023 is R1.7 million, additional subjects were added to the programme to ensure that all students attended extra lessons and were duly prepared for their final exams. In celebrating the Class of 2023, Voorspoed Mine has also donated 75 laptops to top achieving learners – of which 30 will go to the Province’s top achievers, and 45 will go to the District.

Speaking at the Matric Well Done Function hosted by the Department of Education, Voorspoed Mine Closure Manager, Petrus Jordaan expressed how proud he is of the Free State Matric learners and congratulated them on the remarkable feat of being crowned the leading Province nationally for four years. “As a father to one of the matriculants, I am immensely proud and confident that each one of you has a bright future ahead. May this success serve as a stepping stone towards even greater achievement in your journey ahead.”
