In preparation for Debswana’s upcoming Jwaneng underground project, in Botswana, the company has been fostering local talent and enhancing skills development by recruiting graduate learners in various mining-related disciplines.

The 26 selected graduates are undergoing experiential learning at the Mopani Central training centre, in Zambia.

The endeavour not only broadens Debswana’s strategic alliances with other underground mines, but fosters diversity and mitigates business risks.

"The deployment of graduate learner officials to Mopani Copper Mines underscores our commitment to equipping our workforce with the skills and expertise needed for the challenges ahead,” says Debswana MD Andrew Motsomi.

Additionally, Debswana – a joint venture between De Beers and the government of Botswana – has partnered with other underground mines on practical training in various disciplines that are key to underground mining operations.

These partnerships with industry-leading entities will facilitate on-the-job training and experiential learning opportunities, focusing on fields such as geotechnical engineering, geology, hydrogeology, safety and sustainability, mining and engineering.

“Debswana’s investment in talent development reflects its dedication to building a sustainable future for Botswana's mining sector, while fostering innovation and excellence within its workforce,” Motsomi explains.

He adds that, by providing learner officials with access to world-class training and mentorship opportunities, Debswana aims to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of driving the Jwaneng underground project towards success.

As the learner officials embark on their educational journey, Debswana will continue supporting their growth and development, to ensure that they emerge as competent professionals ready to contribute to Botswana's mining renaissance.

Debswana operates four diamond mines in Orapa, Letlhakane, Damtshaa and Jwaneng, in Botswana.

The Jwaneng mine is Debswana’s flagship asset, with a current extension project aimed at supporting mine operations for the next 20 years. The $1-billion expansion project will see the mine shift from open-pit to underground operations and access deeper diamond deposits.
