Fortis HD Pioneers the Use of OEM-Certified Parts in Mining Operations

In many industries, it is a common practice to opt for cheap aftermarket parts to save costs. The mining industry is no exception.

The allure of cheap aftermarket parts comes not just from the obvious upfront savings but also because of their immediate availability.

However, what initially might seem like an effective strategy could quickly become a pitfall of unplanned downtime and expenses.

Take, for instance, the case of a mining client who chose a cheap set of aftermarket chains for a pad swap on a D8 dozer. The cheap set was a non-PPR version. PPR (positive pin retention) adds a retaining ring into the track link, significantly reducing end play (outward pin movement) while increasing sealability and track life.

In the long run, heavy loads and excessive vibrations from operating on a harsh and uneven terrain caused pins to wear prematurely, which, due to the lack of a PPR feature, ended up moving out of the links. A wrong decision just to save a simple $5000.

“When replacing Track Chains on a D8T, it is highly recommended you use a Heavy Duty Option or an OEM HD Equivalent, not a General Duty Chain.

The main difference in these track chains is that the HD/OEM option will come with a PPR track chain.

PPR Chain is suggested in Mining, Heavy Construction, Demolition, and Waste Applications.” says Fortis HD parts expert Josh Davyduke.

At Fortis HD, we know the challenging conditions in the mining industry and are committed to providing premium, OEM-certified parts for mining operations.

“When using a lower-grade track chain, while you may save on some upfront costs, you will lose out on how many hours you can run this machine.

I highly recommend using the PPR Chain in a D8T and up application (D9, D10, D11) and some newer D7 models.” (Fortis HD parts expert: Josh Davyduke).

Regarding mining operations, premium, OEM-certified undercarriage parts are the right call to minimize downtime and ensure cost-efficiency in the long run.

Invest in high-quality replacement parts from trusted suppliers, like Fortis HD, to propel your company toward continued success.
