From site to success: Marjorie Subramoney leads the way for women in construction

In celebration of Women's Month, RIB Software is proud to highlight the incredible journey of Marjorie Subramoney, its Customer Success Senior Consultant: Estimating & Project Controls. As a leading provider of software solutions in the construction industry, RIB Software operates in a traditionally male-dominated field but boasts a strong track record of supporting and promoting women. Female employees, including Marjorie, thrive in their roles and make significant contributions to the company’s success.
Marjorie’s journey in the construction industry began over 15 years ago, as an administrator, on a construction site. Despite initial challenges and being perceived as inexperienced, Marjorie’s dedication and hard work allowed her to develop her skills and grow in the field. “In the early days, I often felt overlooked because of my lack of experience,” she recalls. “But I was determined to prove myself and show that I belonged in this industry.”
Marjorie’s biggest challenge came when she had to choose between her career and starting a family. Fortunate enough to land a job at RIB Software, she found a balance that allowed her to be both a full-time working mother and a dedicated construction professional. “RIB Software provided me with the flexibility I needed to balance my professional and personal life. This support was necessary in my journey, especially when I was promoted, three years after joining the company.”
Empowering women in construction
She notes that while there has been positive progress in the construction industry, the retention of women in the field remains a challenge, particularly when family responsibilities come into play. She adds: “So, for those women in construction looking to become mothers, you do not need to choose motherhood over your career in construction.”
She advocates for a more flexible work environment that accommodates the needs of women, allowing them to balance their careers with their personal lives without feeling inadequate or incompetent. “It's about creating an environment where women can thrive without having to choose between their career and their family.”
Marjorie envisions a future where more women hold management positions in the construction industry, creating a culture of support and respect. She believes that companies should take essential steps to ensure gender equality, including equal pay for equal work, creating a safe and respectful workplace, providing opportunities for learning and development, and supporting women’s career advancement. “We need to see more women in leadership roles, setting examples for the next generation. I need to note that within our team of seven members, of which two of us are women, we are a thriving team, and all have equal respect for each other.”
Words of wisdom
When asked about advice for young women considering a career in construction, she emphasises the importance of staying true to oneself, being assertive, and leveraging one’s strengths. “Be confident in your abilities and don't be afraid to speak up," she advises. She also highlights the importance of setting boundaries, asking for help, avoiding procrastination, and taking time out for oneself to maintain a healthy work-life balance. “Balancing work and life is crucial. Don't hesitate to set boundaries and take time for yourself," Marjorie says.
Reflecting on her extensive experience, Marjorie acknowledges the positive, albeit slow, progress for women. “More young women are taking advantage of the opportunities available to them and making great strides. However, when family responsibilities arise, many women tend to leave the industry for options that align better with family life. Retaining women in construction is where the challenge lies.”
