Commodities major Glencore’s Liddell coal mine has achieved a milestone, with the New South Wales (NSW) government signing off on 52 ha of rehabilitated land. This approval comes less than a year after the mine ceased operations in 2023.

The rehabilitated land, now converted into agricultural grazing pasture, has met all the closure criteria and objectives set out by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment and the NSW Resources Regulator.

Liddell Coal environment and community manager Ben de Somer highlighted that rehabilitation efforts began long before the mine’s closure.

“This rehabilitation represents the first sign-off under the latest New South Wales rehabilitation reforms, which support best practice mine site rehabilitation and sustainable final land issues following the completion of mining,” he said.

In 2023, Glencore invested over A$2.4-million in rehabilitation efforts at Liddell, which included seeding more than 77 ha for native woodland and pasture.

Since 2017, Glencore has secured government sign-off for 15 rehabilitation areas across NSW and Queensland, successfully meeting the completion criteria.
