Grant Sboros
Full Name: Grant Demetrius Sboros
Position and Company Name: CEO of Euro Sun Mining
Main Activity of the Company: Euro Sun Mining is a publicly listed development-stage mining company focused on unlocking value through developing the Rovina Valley project, in west-central Romania, which is one of Europe’s largest copper/gold projects
Date and Place of Birth: January 13, 1979, Johannesburg, South Africa
Schools and Tertiary Education: Saheti School; University of South Africa; University of Pretoria; CA(SA)
First Job: Sales assistant at a local hardware store
Size of First Pay Packet: R200 a month
Career Path to Date: My mining career began as head of auditing as a Deloitte partner in Mozambique from 2007 to 2017. From there I worked for Glencore as deputy CFO at Mopani Copper Mines from 2013 to 2017. Following this, I did a stint as CFO for Katanga Mining from 2017 to 2019, before being appointed executive director of Forbes Manhattan responsible for the company’s African mining assets. I was appointed CEO of Euro Sun Mining in early 2023
Value of Assets under Your Control: About $25-million
Number of People under Your Leadership: About 50
Management Style: I enjoy an open, democratic style of management, hopefully allowing my colleagues the freedom to excel at the tasks they are employed for. In this way, everyone’s opinion is respected, which creates team camaraderie. I do, however, have a direct persona, and everyone understands that I am here to make the hard strategic business decisions when necessary
Personal Best Achievement: Besides my beautiful family, achieving many business milestones over the years and, more recently, overcoming the challenges facing Euro Sun Mining through perseverance and a determination to change perceptions
Person Who Has Had the Biggest Influence on Your Life: My grandfather – he was a very special man who believed in me, and influenced my life through his unwavering support, mentorship and gentle way of challenging me to excel
Person Who Has Had the Biggest Influence on Your Career: Probably Ivan Glasenberg. The years I spent working for Glencore during its pioneering expansion phase built a solid foundation of the financial expertise required when running complex mining operations
Person You Would Most Like to Meet: Too late now – I really would have liked to have met the Queen of England. As someone who was central to history over the past 100 years, she must have been privy to so much information and insight
Philosophy of Life: Those who know me well will confirm that it's ‘work hard and play hard’
Biggest Ever Opportunity: Euro Sun Mining’s Rovina Valley project presents the biggest opportunity for me and our business partners. Bringing much-needed investment back to a region steeped in a 2 000-year mining tradition, the project puts European mining firmly back on the international stage. It has been a gritty struggle to get the business to this point, but, with minimal environmental impact, the project is now ready to support Europe’s critical mineral supply, and the numbers paint a profitable outcome
Biggest Ever Disappointment: No career is without disappointment but, thankfully, I have always been surrounded with great colleagues along the way to soften the blows
Hope for the Future: That the hard work, sacrifices and dedication of Euro Sun Mining team members (and supporters) to get this project over the line will be rewarded this year. Many of the team members have laboured for many years, and this will be a career highlight. Personally, I hope to make a positive contribution and leave a legacy for my family. Maybe my soccer team could also win a title again!
