Graphite One named in Alaska Governor’s address
TSX-V-listed Graphite One has been recognised by Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy in his State of the State Address this week, underscoring the project’s economic and national security significance.
Graphite One was one of two critical mineral projects specifically named in Dunleavy's January 29 address to the Alaska Legislature, the other being the Red Dog zinc mine that received approval from the federal government for its permit to build a road to an additional find that will extend the life of the mine.
"The Graphite One deposit, the largest in North America, north of Nome, continues to move ahead with support from a Defense Department grant," Dunleavy stated. "Construction could begin in that project by 2027 and the mine could be producing as early as 2029."
Graphite One CEO Anthony Huston welcomed the Governor’s support, pointing out the project’s strategic importance in reducing US dependency on foreign-sourced graphite.
"All of us at Graphite One are gratified by the support Governor Dunleavy continues to show for our project," said Huston. "He sees the strategy we are pursuing to break the US's 100% dependency on foreign-sourced graphite as key to the kind of critical miineral projects that will demonstrate Alaska's role as an essential US source of the metals and minerals transforming the twenty-first century."
Huston further highlighted the challenges of import reliance, noting that demand for graphite was expected to outpace supplies from foreign sources, including allied nations.
The Governor’s speech also addressed the need for permitting reforms at the state level to align with federal initiatives. He referenced President Donald Trump's early Executive Orders prioritising mineral development.
"As Governor, I couldn't be more excited about the next four years, under the most pro-Alaska President we've ever had in President Donald J. Trump. President Trump singled out Alaska out of all the 50 states for its own series of executive orders. This is unprecedented - and demonstrates his view of the importance of Alaska as a solution to America's energy, manufacturing, and national security issues."
Graphite was initially included in the US government’s critical minerals list in 2018 under the Trump administration, identified as one of four minerals for which the US remains 100% import-dependent while meeting all six industrial and defence sector indicators.
