Highland Copper advances early site works, highlights benefits of concurrent reclamation at Copperwood
TSX-V- and OTCQB-listed Highland Copper Company has completed its early site works and environmental mitigation programme at the fully permitted Copperwood project, in Michigan, US.
The programme, which was completed safely, on budget and in compliance with the Michigan Wetlands and Streams Permit, aims to prepare the site for future construction while implementing environmental safeguards and controls. The work has been subject to ongoing inspection from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and has met all regulatory obligations.
Highland said the programme had demonstrated the positive impact of concurrent reclamation. Completion of the initiative ensures permits remain in good standing and reinforces the company’s commitment to responsible development.
The programme involved the construction of about 18 acres of compensating wetlands, the planting of nearly 20 000 native trees, wildflowers, sedges and rushes, and a commitment to establish a 717-acre wetland preservation area through a conservation easement and long-term management plan.
“Michigan has stringent regulation to ensure mining projects minimize and mitigate their impact. Highland takes this commitment seriously and has demonstrated this with its environmental mitigation work at this early stage of its development. We are also showing that reclamation does not need to start at closure. It can be done concurrent with development. We are particularly pleased that the stream and wetland projects are maturing well into high-quality habitats,” said CEO Barry O’Shea.
The mitigation projects, which include stream diversion and wetland restoration, are continuing to develop into self-sustaining systems rich in biodiversity.
Highland Copper is focused on developing copper projects in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The company owns the Copperwood deposit and 34% of the White Pine North project through a joint venture with Kinterra Copper USA.
