Indigenous-led impact assessment initiative for Springpole
Canadian project developer First Nation Mining said last week that it had entered into a “process agreement” with Cat Lake First Nation and Lac Seul First Nation that will provide capacity to support the implementation of a community-based Anishinaabe-led impact assessment.
The agreement represents a significant commitment for First Mining and provides the framework for First Mining, Cat Lake and Lac Seul to have “procedural clarity and meaningful participation” in the review of the Springpole gold project.
"We are very pleased to support this leading-edge work on community-based Indigenous engagement for the Springpole project with Cat Lake and Lac Seul,” said First Nation Mining CEO Dan Wilton.
He said Springpole had the potential to deliver significant infrastructure and economic benefits to an underserviced area of north-western Ontario. “. . . we believe that the project, properly delivered with respect and protection for the land, air and water, can have a lasting positive impact for generations to come."
Springpole is one of the biggest undeveloped openpit gold projects in North America. The project has proven and probable reserves of 3.8-million ounces of gold and 20.5-million ounces of silver.
A proposal for an openpit mine, producing about 300 000 oz/y of gold, is currently advancing through the federal environmental assessment stage.
The deposit is under a bay of Springpole Lake. According to Timmins Today, the construction plan involves building dikes and draining the bay to carve out a pit and access the orebody.
