Ir Olav's Globetrotters: Bridging South African talent with Dutch opportunities
Ir Olav's Globetrotters international recruiter Anene Britz speaks to Mining Weekly at Electra Mining Africa 2024.
The shortage of skilled engineers and technical professionals in the Netherlands has opened up significant opportunities for South African engineers and technical professionals.
In the first quarter of 2024, there were 110 vacancies for every 100 unemployed individuals, marking the tenth consecutive quarter with more jobs than workers, according to international recruitment agency Ir Olav's Globetrotters
This shortage spans various engineering disciplines, including electrical, chemical, civil and mechanical engineering, and Ir Olav's Globetrotters, specialising in connecting South African talent with Dutch companies, is bridging this gap.
Ir Olav's Globetrotters was founded in September 2020 by Sonja Poortman and Diane van Galen Last, with a vision of creating a seamless process for South African professionals seeking to relocate and advance their careers in the Netherlands.
“The demand for skilled professionals in the Netherlands is not just a trend but a pressing need. Our role is to facilitate the connection between Dutch companies and South African talent, ensuring a smooth transition for professionals moving to the Netherlands,” explains Poortman.
“Our focus has always been on technical fields across various industries. South African engineers and technical professionals bring a wealth of expertise and adaptability, which is highly valued by our Dutch clients,” says van Galen Last.
Ir Olav's Globetrotters has registered branch in South Africa, led by operational director Wendy Nelson to ensure that candidates receive robust local support, personalised guidance and support throughout the relocation process.
The company has successfully relocated over 400 South African professionals through a well-defined process to assist candidates from the initial stages of recruitment to their final relocation and settlement in the Netherlands. This includes regular events and get-togethers, providing a community feel and mutual support among fellow expatriates.
“Our process includes everything from applying for the Knowledge Migrant Visa to assisting with administrative tasks such as BSN registration, health insurance, and even finding a new home. We mentor our candidates during the initial months, ensuring they are well-integrated into their new roles and the Dutch society,” details van Galen Last.
To further assist with the relocation process, Ir Olav's Globetrotters has published an invaluable resource titled "Wanna Go Dutch?", a comprehensive e-book designed to guide South African professionals through every step of relocating to the Netherlands.
