Name and Location
Kangwane Central anthracite project, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Client
Zyl.

Project Description
The results of a bankable feasibility study (BFS) on the Kangwane Central project have demonstrated a long-life anthracite project, with robust economics and inherent flexibility by virtue of having multiple opencast pits in combination with underground sections.

The project has Joint Ore Reserves Committee- (Jorc-) compliant resources of 200-million tons, all in the measured category, of which less than half will be mined during the initial 20 years of mining.

Jorc-compliant reserves total 19.3-million tons, including proven reserves of 17.4-million tons.

The BFS envisages an opencast mine developed in phases, producing about 1.2-million tons of run-of-mine (RoM) for the first 11 years and, over time, transforming into an opencast/underground operation producing 900 000 t RoM.

The coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) will treat 200 t/h, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, using industry-standard dense-medium cyclones and spirals. The CHPP will handle raw coal, coal washing and product and discard materials from multiple coal seams over the life of the project.

Value
Start-up capital is estimated at $67.6-million, with further capital of $70.8-million required for underground operation start-ups in years 5, 6 and 11.

Duration
Zyl expects to secure the necessary approvals for the project and start production by 2014.
