Merafe’s year-to-date ferrochrome output down 51%
JSE-listed Merafe Resources’ attributable ferrochrome production from the Glencore Merafe chrome venture for the nine months ended September 30 was 112 000 t – a 51% decrease on the 230 000 t produced in the nine months ended September 30, 2024.
The lower production was primarily the result of the suspension of production at the venture’s smelters owing to adverse market conditions.
Ferrochrome production for the third quarter, ended September 30, was 709 t.
Further, attributable chrome ore production from the venture in the third quarter was 267 000 t, resulting in a year-on-year decrease of about 3% in production to 710 000 t for the nine months ended September 30.
Merafe says this decrease in production is mainly the result of temporary equipment breakdowns experienced during the current period.
Lastly, attributable platinum group metals concentrate production from the venture in the third quarter was 4 000 oz, resulting in a 6% year-on-year increase in output to 11 000 oz for the nine months ended September 30.
Merafe says this increase in production is largely owing to higher feed tonnages.
