Junior exploration and development company Musk Metals is positioning itself as a player in the germanium market by expanding its Lac du Km 35 property near Chibougamau, Quebec.

The company has added to the property through claim staking in the recently optioned Lac du Km, bringing the total area to 75 claims covering 4 150 ha.

“Germanium spot prices have traded as high as $4 000/kg last month, reflecting a 44% increase over the past 12 months. As the global supply faces unprecedented challenges due to geopolitical dynamics, the strategic importance of this critical metal is clearer than ever,” comments CEO Mario Pezzente.

Germanium is a critical metal with growing demand across several high-tech industries. It is used in electronics, solar panels, fibre optics, and infrared optics for civil and military applications.

One particularly notable application is in autonomous vehicle driving systems, where germanium plays a key role in thermal imaging cameras and night vision devices.

Germanium is included in the critical minerals lists of Canada, the US, and the EU.

The germanium market is facing disruptions particularly after China – the largest producer of refined germanium – implemented an export ban on germanium to the US on December 3.
