Name of the Project
Narrabri Stage 3 extension project.

Location
New South Wales, Australia.

Project Owner/s
Whitehaven Coal.

Project Description
Narrabri is an existing underground mine, approved to extract coal at 11-million tonnes a year of run-of-mine coal until 2031.

The Stage 3 extension project entails the continuation of longwall mining, at 11-million tonnes a year, in a new southern extension area until 2044.

The project involves the extensions of the existing approved longwalls 203 to 209, and the development of an additional longwall 210.

The project will use established surface infrastructure, including the existing coal handling preparation plant, rail loop, boxcut and offices.

Potential Job Creation
The project will employ about 500 workers.

Latest Developments
A full bench of the federal court has dismissed an objection raised by community organisation Environment Council of Central Queensland (ECCQ) against the project.

Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek will make a final determination regarding the extension of the mine.

ECCQ has expressed disappointment, articulating concerns through its social media channels. The organisation fears that the judgment will open the floodgates for the Minister to approve dozens of new coal and gas projects, but remains resolute in its mission and vowed to explore its legal avenues to challenge the decision.
