National Treasury’s commitment to strengthen green finance landscape is applaudable

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen last month encouraged South Africa to harness its superior sun, prime wind and overwhelming platinum group metals endowment by becoming a strong participant in the global green energy economy. No doubt about it, the green energy economy presents an opportunity for our country to do what Namibia began doing on March 10 – producing green hydrogen with its eye on the export market.

What is commendable is that South Africa’s Treasury has seen fit to put out a media release on the key steps needed to strengthen South Africa’s green finance taxonomy within the ambit of projects that contribute to climate objectives. Interestingly, clean energy and green hydrogen form the main part of the R94-billion investment package highlighted by Von der Leyen at the EU-South Africa Summit in Cape Town, which makes the National Treasury’s South Africa Green Finance Taxonomy, or SA GFT framework, helpful in positioning South Africa appropriately along the sustainable finance road.
