Calgary-based CTI Plus Resources has put forward plans to develop an openpit metallurgical coal mine, known as the Rocky Creek project, in British Columbia.

The proposed site is located about 47 km south-west of Chetwynd. If approved, the project will produce up to 3.77-million tonnes a year of coal, with an expected mine life of 18 years.

The coal extracted from the Rocky Creek project will be transported by rail to British Columbia's west coast for export to international markets.

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) and British Columbia's Environmental Assessment Office (BC EAO) have this week opened a public comment period for the project.

Feedback is invited on the summary of the initial project description (IPD) and the substitution request, which would streamline provincial and federal regulatory processes. Comments can be submitted until November 6.

In September, CTI Plus submitted its IPD and engagement plan (EP) to the BC EAO and the IAAC. The IPD outlines the project's scope and its potential environmental impacts, while the EP emphasises the company's commitment to engaging with Indigenous nations, local communities, and other stakeholders throughout the project assessment process.

“We are excited to develop this metallurgical coal openpit mine project which will greatly benefit the economy and create significant high-paying jobs for the local communities. We are also dedicated to ensuring that our project is developed responsibly and sustainably,” said CEO Yulin Li last month.

CTI Plus has stressed its commitment to fostering strong relationships with Indigenous nations and local communities.
