Western Australian Premier Roger Cook on Wednesday announced the new Ministerial portfolios for the WA Labor government, outlining a vision focused on economic diversification, energy transition, job creation, and improvements to health services across the state.

The Cabinet, which introduces several new portfolios, reflects Cook’s commitment to making Western Australia a renewable-energy powerhouse while strengthening the economy and supporting local manufacturing. The Premier emphasised that securing affordable energy and assisting trading partners in their decarbonisation efforts were key priorities of his administration.

A restructuring within the health sector sees the introduction of the Health Infrastructure portfolio, which will oversee significant projects, including the new Women's and Babies Hospital, expansions at Perth Children’s Hospital and Osborne Park, and emergency department upgrades at Royal Perth and Midland hospitals. The new Preventative Health portfolio aims to reduce long-term hospital demand, while the Aged Care and Seniors portfolio is designed to collaborate with the Commonwealth to increase aged care capacity and alleviate pressure on hospital beds.

In an effort to boost local manufacturing and economic resilience, the government has created portfolios dedicated to Economic Diversification and Manufacturing. These initiatives align with Cook’s vision of a future that is “made in WA,” ensuring the state’s workforce is equipped to build homes, manufacture goods, and provide essential services.

Regional communities will also benefit from the Cabinet reshuffle, with the introduction of a dedicated Minister for each region. Their responsibilities will include fostering local employment opportunities and ensuring regional areas receive necessary infrastructure and services. The government has committed to addressing regional needs comprehensively, reinforcing its promise to support all Western Australians, regardless of location.

Among key appointments, Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti takes on the roles of Treasurer, Transport, and Sport and Recreation. Amber-Jade Sanderson will lead the newly established Energy and Decarbonisation portfolio, in addition to overseeing Manufacturing, Skills and TAFE, and the Pilbara region. John Carey has been appointed Minister for Planning and Lands, Housing and Works, and Health Infrastructure, while David Michael takes charge of Mines and Petroleum, Finance, Electoral Affairs, and the Goldfields-Esperance region.

Cook reiterated that in an era of global uncertainty, his government’s priority was to build a more resilient Western Australian economy. The transition away from coal-fired power generation, investment in renewable energy, and strengthened regional representation were central to his administration’s agenda.
