US-headquartered gold major Newmont on Friday announced the appointment of Francois Hardy as new chief technology officer (CTO).

With more than three decades of technical and operational expertise in the mining industry, Hardy brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Having joined Newmont in 2002, Hardy has held various key positions within the company, including group head of exploration, MD for Africa and general manager at Tanami.

A graduate of Technikon Witwatersrand (now University of Johannesburg), Hardy holds a BSc in Mine Engineering and a National Higher Diploma in Metalliferous Mining from the University of Johannesburg.

Hardy is set to be stationed at Newmont's headquarters in Denver and will officially assume his new responsibilities as CTO effective May 1, 2024.

Hardy is succeeding Dean Gehring, who served as interim CTO while concurrently holding the position of chief integration officer. Following a transitional period, Gehring will be departing from the company in early July.

“Francois is a strong leader with deep technical experience and a demonstrable track record of improving operating performance. His appointment will further strengthen Newmont’s executive leadership team, adding valuable technological expertise which will be central to our ongoing success as a business,” said president and CEO Tom Palmer.
