NUI livens up local market with SA-made tyre fill products

Keen to get the jump on the international competition, Gauteng- based National Urethane Industries (NUI) has developed a locally manufactured tyre fill product for industrial and mining tyre use.

Traditionally, tyre fill or foam fill, has been a fully imported product but, with the application being made in South Africa, NUI believes that this will make its offering more affordable.

“NUI is the first and only local polyurethane elastomer formulator and manufacturer to successfully produce various grades of tyre fill at competitive prices. “Most applicators would have to import container loads of product in the hope that they would sell the container load of product in an acceptable timeframe, converting the stock investment of tyre fill back into cash to assist with cash flow. “Now that a local product is available, the large inventory of tyre fill raw products can be purchased on a day-to-day basis from within South Africa,” explains NUI CEO Donovan Slade.

Slade believes that the imminent changes in the Mining Charter will play firmly into NUI’s hands. “With the pending Mining Charter, it is expected that the use of locally manufactured and procured goods will be advantageous to the off-the-road tyre retailer,” he says.

So confident is NUI that its product will find favour in the South African market that the company has invested in upgrades to its current manufacturing capability in Isando, Gauteng, and recently added two 10 000 ℓ reactors, which should cater for the requirements of this market segment.

With mining as one of the company’s key focus industries, NUI’s products are used in underground and above ground applications with the asset owner achieving the full life of the tyre carcass.

“Our tyre fill elastomer typically exhibits twice the physical properties of our competitors,” Slade says.

The product, however, is not limited to mining application and NUI finds its client base extending into forestry, freight docks, transportation, quarries, factory transportation, airport ladders and even garbage and sanitation.

NUI has also formulated new ecofriendly grades of tyre fill that use non-petrochemical oil extenders.
