Omnia acquires minority shareholding in Swedish explosives manufacturer maker
JSE-listed chemicals group Omnia has partnered with Sweden-based Hypex Bio Explosives Technology through the acquisition of a minority stake in the company.
Hypex has been developing sustainable civil explosive solutions, including an emulsion, using hydrogen peroxide (HP) that offers substantially enhanced environmental benefits compared with conventional products.
The collaboration between Omnia and Hypex will further enhance the development and commercial roll-out of the HP technology in key markets.
Notably, Omnia’s blasting solutions subsidiary BME will help to extend Hypex’s products in the Australian, Australasian, North American and Brazillian markets.
“Hypex is a good strategic fit for BME and aligns with Omnia’s sustainability and high-growth objectives, including pollution and carbon dioxide reduction.
“Hypex has developed the first non-nitrate explosive emulsions in the market and reduced the carbon content by 90% over traditional sources. This technology has the potential to completely change the explosives supply industry,” explains Omnia CEO Seelan Gobalsamy.
BME MD Ralf Hennecke adds that, as one of the largest explosives and blasting solutions suppliers on the African continent, BME is pursuing a globalisation strategy which is optimally aligned to the sustainable, nitrate-free emulsion technology offered by Hypex.
Hypex’s experience in rapid, yet safe, development cycles, combined with BME’s proven record in commercialisation activities, will further strengthen the organisation and enable the partners to invest in accelerated growth.
Hypex CEO Thomas Gustavsson says the culture of Omnia and BME is well aligned with that of Hypex. He foresees significant synergies as a result of the partnership.
“As a responsible industry leader, we are committed to sustainable innovation and responsible use of chemicals for the health, safety and wellbeing of our planet and its people,” said Gobalsamy.
