Toronto- and New York-listed Orla Mining has temporarily halted openpit mining at its Camino Rojo Oxide mine in Mexico following an uncontrolled material movement on the pit’s temporary north wall.

The event, which occurred July 23, caused about 390 000 t of material to shift into the pit, the company said in a statement. There were no injuries, and ramp access remains open. Crushing, stacking, and processing activities continue, with production currently fed by existing stockpiles.

Geotechnical assessments by internal and third-party experts are under way and are expected to be completed in the coming week, with a remediation plan to follow.

Until in-pit mining resumes, Orla will rely on its 2.24-million-tonne stockpile, grading 0.32 g/t gold, to maintain operations. The company’s mining capacity is about 50 000 t/d to 60 000 t/d, while its crushing throughput is about 18 000 t/d to 19 000 t/d.

The company said it would update its full-year production and cost guidance once it has more clarity on the timeline for resuming pit operations.
