POWERING UP

Swedish cleantech company Ripasso Energy has invested in a new power generation unit in South Africa that produces electricity using industrial residual gases. The plant has been constructed at speciality alloys company Afarak Mogales’ Kurgersdorp processing facility and has come on stream at a time when South Africa is, once again, experiencing growth-destroying rotational power cuts. The PWR BLOK 400-F comprises 14 Stirling engines, and auxiliary equipment housed within a standard shipping container, to produce a net output of 400 kW. Ripasso Energy claims that the Stirling engine is unique in its high-efficiency and external combustion design, making it “virtually indifferent” to the type of gas being burned and to the quality of the gas in question, and an ideal solution for a client such as Afarak Mogales.
