Qld levels playing field for mining and renewables
The Queensland government has moved to balance the regulatory requirements for the mineral resources and renewable-energy industries, announcing new planning policies that will subject wind farm developments to stricter approval processes.
The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (Amec) has welcomed the policy, with acting Queensland director Kate Dickson commending the move as an Australian first.
“These strict new development approval processes for wind farm developments is an Australian first and should be commended,” said Dickson.
Under the new framework, wind farm developers will now face similar expectations to those long imposed on the exploration, mining, and agricultural sectors. This includes mandatory public consultation and the ability for third-party appeals.
“For too long, the exploration and mining industry has faced tougher environmental and approval standards than their counterparts in the renewable space,” Dickson added.
The updated planning requirements will come into effect on Monday, with the government indicating that similar regulations will eventually be introduced for other renewable-energy projects, including solar farms. The initiative also includes the development of a community benefit framework for renewable-energy projects.
Amec says this was a vital first step in advancing multi-land use policy, something the organisation has long advocated for, particularly as part of its Queensland Election Policy Platform.
“This sends a clear message from the new state government, and an important first step in establishing new multi land use policy,” Amec stated.
While supporting the new regulations, Dickson also acknowledged the important role of renewables in the energy transition. “There is no doubt that renewables play an essential role in the energy transition, but so do the critical minerals required to make the wind and solar farms,” she said.
“With a coordinated and common-sense approach, we enhance our ability to coexist with community, [and] mineral and renewable resources. By doing so, we can achieve outstanding outcomes for the state and our nation.”
