Simandou to be transformative for Guinea – law firm
The successful development of the Simandou iron-ore project will have a transformative impact on the Guinean economy and its people and bring green solutions to the steelmaking industry in China and around the world, says law firm Hogan Lovells.
The firm advised Chinese steel producer Baowu Steel Group, which will co-develop the mining and infrastructure project, over years of negotiations.
Simandou is a strategic project between China and the Republic of Guinea and is planned to produce 120-million tons a year of high-grade iron-ore.
The $15-billion Simandou mining and infrastructure project encompasses four mining blocks, two ports and a 600 km railway line crossing the entire country connecting the mines to the ports.
The owners of the mines and the co-developers of the infrastructure are a joint venture between Baowu and Winning Consortium Simandou, and Simfer, which is a joint venture between global miner Rio Tinto and a Chinese consortium led by Chinese aluminium producer Chinalco.
Hogan Lovell will continue supporting Baowu and its partners to complete the construction of the project and put it into operation.
