One of the top global awards in extractive metallurgy – the Wadsworth Award from The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) – has been presented to Dr Frank Crundwell of CM Solutions/Crundwell Metallurgy.

Presented on March 3, during mining conference MineXchange in Denver, in the US, the Wadsworth Award acknowledges distinguished contributions to the science and technology of nonferrous chemical metallurgy.

Crundwell was nominated on the basis of his work in hydrometallurgy, leaching and the development of the theory of dissolution.

The citation reads – for “innovative, rigorous contributions that have enhanced fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of oxidative and non-oxidative leaching of non-ferrous minerals, including sulphides, oxides and silicates”.

He says it is “fantastic” to receive recognition for a lifetime’s work in the field and that he hopes the work he has started will be developed and used in ways that cannot yet be imagined.

MineXchange is a yearly mining conference and expo of SME which brings together thought leaders from across the mining industry to get the insights, information and tools needed to excel in an era of innovation and economic change.
