Australia-listed Talga Group’s planned battery anode refinery in Luleå, Sweden, has been designated a net-zero strategic project under the EU's Net-Zero Industry Act, the company announced on Wednesday.

The status was granted by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth.

The Luleå anode refinery is part of Talga’s vertically integrated Vittangi anode project and is among the first initiatives to receive this classification under the EU’s new industrial framework. The designation is aimed at accelerating the development of clean technology projects deemed essential to the EU’s energy transition and strategic autonomy.

Strategic project status provides a range of benefits, including expedited permitting, national priority in administrative processes, enhanced access to EU advisory platforms, and potentially increased eligibility for public funding and procurement opportunities.

“This recognition underscores our role as a trusted supplier in the European battery materials supply chain,” said Talga CEO Martin Phillips. “It further strengthens our ability to finalise supply agreements and financing for the Vittangi anode project.”

The Luleå refinery is designed to produce 19 500 t/y of low-emission natural graphite anode material, with long-term expansion potential exceeding 100 000 t/y.

Talga’s natural graphite mine was also designated a strategic project under the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act in March.

Together, the dual recognitions position Talga as a key player in Europe’s decarbonisation push, Talga said.
