TFR says will act swiftly if unscheduled ghost train allegations are true

State-owned rail network operator Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) says it has referred allegations that trains that are not formally scheduled by it are operating on its lines for independent investigation and, if they are proven correct, TFR will act swiftly.

"These serious allegations have not yet been accompanied by supporting evidence. In the course of the investigation, the whistle-blowers, implicated persons and relevant customers mentioned will all be approached for statements," it said.

The allegations of so-called ghost trains implicate some TFR employees and third parties. Such unscheduled trains do not lead to revenue flowing back to TFR.

"We appreciate the transparent collaboration of all involved. Any further updates will be provided at the appropriate time," it said.
