The Pivotal Role of Gas in South Africa's Energy Evolution
SLG, the second-largest natural gas trader in South Africa, and its subsidiary SLCNG, is the largest operations of compressed natural gas in Southern Africa continues to address South Africa's limited gas supply to meet economic energy demands.
SLG Group CEO Mzi Tyhokolo stated that SLG has been driven to expand into new markets, since it was established 20 years ago as a significant trader in the market at the tail end of the gas supply chain. These offerings will replace more emissions-intensive fossil fuels and dwindling natural gas supplies in South Africa.
Tyhokolo underscores that if natural gas is to play a significant role in decarbonising South Africa's economy, its market share must be boosted by at least 4% by 2030, in line with governmental policies.
‘This shift, as well as the mind-set of industry must be shifted quickly to align with South Africa's energy transition. The uncertainty of gas availability beyond 2024, as well as the general energy crisis in South Africa have led SLG to search for expansion opportunities. One of these is to become an LNG aggregator to capitalize on economies of scale and develop Gas to Power projects, says Tyhokolo.
With SLG’s strong understanding of the various gas markets, its entrepreneurial culture, and superior customer valued-added service offering, we are confident that SLG is ready to take on the challenge of expanding its markets and diversifying its products beyond 2030.
