Thugs storm Plomosas mine in Mexico
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Base metal miner Consolidated Zinc has reported a security incident at its Plomosas zinc mine, in Mexico.
The company on Tuesday reported that a group of armed intruders entered the Plomosas mine on Good Friday, taking the security guard and employees captive, and locking them in a sea container.
The armed intruders stole about 80 t of zinc and lead concentrates valued at about $120 000.
No security guards or employees were harmed during the incident and staff are being counselled and supported.
The miner told shareholders that security has been improved at the Plomosas site since the concentrate theft in November 2021, including upgrading physical barriers on the access road which was used. Further security measures will be considered.
The company’s Mexican subsidiary Minera Latin American Zinc SAPI de CV is working with the Mexican Federal Police and Mexican Army in the hope of apprehending the criminals.
