US Interior Dept signals support for Alaska’s Ambler road project
The US Interior Department is taking steps to advance the Ambler road project in Northwest Alaska, signalling support for expanded resource development in the state.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced the move following President Donald Trump’s latest executive order aimed at bolstering domestic mineral production.
The proposed industrial-use-only road would connect the Dalton Highway to the Upper Kobuk mineral projects, held by Ambler Metals, a joint venture between Trilogy Metals and South32.
The project is seen as critical for unlocking mineral-rich deposits in the region but has faced opposition from environmental groups and Indigenous communities concerned about its impact on local ecosystems and subsistence activities.
“It’s time for the US to embrace Alaska’s abundant and largely untapped resources as a pathway to prosperity for the nation, including Alaskans,” Burgum said in a statement on Thursday.
As part of the initiative, the Bureau of Land Management will pursue the partial revocation of public land withdrawals, a move that could clear regulatory hurdles for the Ambler road and the Alaska liquefied natural gas pipeline project.
The agency is also planning to expand energy development opportunities in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska and reinstate a programme allowing oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s Coastal Plain.
