Global metals company Vale has announced the successful completion of the Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion (VBME) project in Canada.

The expansion shifts the Voisey’s Bay operation from openpit to underground mining, a transition that will ensure the long-term sustainability of the site, located in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The VBME project includes the development of two underground mines – Reid Brook and Eastern Deeps – which are designed to provide ore for processing at Vale’s Long Harbour Refinery, one of the lowest-emission nickel processing plants in the world.

The expanded mine is expected to produce about 45 000 t/y of nickel, alongside 20 000 t/y of copper and 2 600 t/y of cobalt as by-products.

Full ramp-up of the expanded operations is projected for the second half of 2026.

Vale says the completion of the VBME will significantly lower unit costs for its nickel business segment.

The expansion is also expected to have a lasting impact on the local economy, creating jobs and promoting local procurement.

Voisey’s Bay began production in 2005. The nickel, copper, and cobalt produced from the operation contribute to meeting the growing demand for materials used in electric vehicles and clean energy technologies.
