Worker dies at Tanami gold mine
Australia’s minerals industry and federal Resources Minister Madeleine King have expressed condolences following the death of a worker at Newmont’s Tanami gold mine in the Northern Territory.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, prompting investigations by Northern Territory WorkSafe and police.
In a statement posted on LinkedIn, King said she was “extremely saddened” by the news.
“I am extremely saddened to hear of the death of a miner at Newmont's Tanami Gold Mine in the Northern Territory on Wednesday. My thoughts go out to the family, loved ones, friends, co-workers and anyone impacted by this tragedy. Everyone deserves to be safe at work and return home at the end of their shift."
She said that Northern Territory WorkSafe had launched an inquiry into the incident and that police were continuing to investigate.
The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) also issued a statement expressing sympathy to those affected.
"The MCA extends its sympathies to family, friends and workmates and thanks the emergency services personnel who responded to this incident," said MCA CEO Tania Constable.
"Safety remains the highest priority for our industry, and any loss of life is a stark reminder of the critical importance of our ongoing efforts to ensure every worker returns home safely.
"The MCA, alongside the entire Australian mining community, will continue to work hard towards eliminating fatalities across the sector.”
The Tanami operation is one of Australia’s largest gold mines.
