The government of Yukon has launched an independent technical review into the heap leach failure at the Eagle Gold mine in June.

The investigation will be led by a review board, comprising geotechnical expert Jean-Marie Konrad, senior civil engineer Les Sawatsky and professional engineer Mark Smith, which will review the design, construction, operation, maintenance and monitoring of the heap leach facility.

“The Independent Review Board is the most expedient process for determining the causes of the heap leach facility failure and will lead to changes that will help to prevent another event like this one from occurring in the future,” said Energy and Mines Minister John Streicker.

He added that the Yukon government recognised the seriousness of the heap leach failure that occurred at the Eagle Gold mine.

“As a responsible regulator, the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources must determine the causes of the failure to inform future decisions about the Eagle Gold project, as well as other future projects in the territory.”

The mine’s owner, TSX-V-listed Victoria Gold, was placed into receivership after the collapse of the heap leach pad.

According to the Yukon government, more than C$50-million in liens have been filed against the company.
