Zambia’s Kashime copper mine approved to start operations
The Kashime copper mine project, located in the Upper Lusemfwa area of Mkushi district in Zambia, has received authorisation to start mining operations.
The project is primarily being developed by Zambian-owned Mimosa Resources, while First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has committed to finance and conduct further exploration within the licence area.
In September 2024, Mimosa Resources announced that it had attracted an initial $3-million investment from ASX-listed Zeta Resources to fund final feasibility studies and preparatory development work at the Central Province site.
Commenting on the new development, Mkushi Mayor Melson Chilemu expressed relief and gratitude on the progress made, and posited that the project would pave the way for jobs and economic growth for both the local and national economy.
“On behalf of the people of Mkushi and the country at large, I would like to thank His Excellency the President of Zambia, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, for once again hearing our cry. This authorisation, achieved after over 15 years of struggle, is a testament to perseverance.
“Our sincere gratitude also extends to His Royal Highness Chief Chitina, Mimosa Resources, the Mkushi Mining Federation, Elias Chipimo Associates, and all those who stood with us to make this dream come true. It was not an easy path, but this approval heralds more business, more jobs, and more opportunities for our people,” he said.
Mimosa Resources executive chairperson Jordan Soko said the Kashime project showcased the ability of Zambians to own and develop mining operations and contribute to the country’s economic and social development.
“We look forward to developing this resource responsibly, creating value for the local communities in Mkushi, and contributing significantly to Zambia’s goal of increasing copper production. This project represents a shared vision for growth and opportunity in the mining sector,” he said.
“The Kashime project aligns with FQM’s goals of seeing the mining sector grow and it is gratifying to see a Zambian-owned mining company taking the lead in developing a project of this magnitude,” FQM country director Anthony Mukutuma said.
The development of the Kashime mine and processing complex is anticipated to have wider developmental benefits for the communities around the mine, Mkushi town, and across Zambia, as it contributes to the national aspiration of three-million tonnes of copper production a year in the medium term.
