With a major increase in renewable energy projects anticipated over the next 12 months, turnkey electrical solutions provider Actom is confident that this will translate into an increased demand for products and services, especially considering the general maintenance backlogs for power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Projects stemming out of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme’s (REIPPPP’s) Bid Windows 5 and 6, as well as self-generation projects, will further add to this demand, the company says.

CEO Mervyn Naidoo comments that while there are short-term challenges in South Africa, Actom remains optimistic about the opportunities that will manifest with the numerous planned infrastructure projects in the country.

“We have seen an upturn in economic activity in some sectors of industry, a major one of which has been mining, which has been stimulated owing to commodity demand that is fueled by various global factors.”

Actom, overall, provides turnkey solutions as well as system integration and project management of large infrastructure projects, and is a major local supplier of electrical equipment, services and balance of plant to renewable energy projects.

In addition to this, the company offers design, manufacturing, supply and service of most of the electromechanical equipment used in the generation, transmission and distribution of energy.

“We also provide equipment for the rail industry, and in the mining sector we supply electrical equipment for opencast mining, turnkey systems motors, generators for excavators, off-highway vehicles, locomotives, drilling and pumping applications, and DC and traction motors,” Naidoo says.

Actom is one of the largest manufacturers, solution providers, repairers, maintainers and distributors of electro-mechanical equipment in Africa, with 33 outlets throughout sub-Saharan Africa offering clients a one-stop solution through its businesses and partners to provide market-leading, technologically advanced products and services.

“We are unique in that we can provide a turnkey offering to customers with supply and services across the full product life cycle. Aftermarket support is critical to optimise plant performance and availability,” Naidoo enthuses, adding that the company’s extensive footprint makes the company “accessible for the repair and maintenance of installed equipment on the continent, thus providing for an optimal turnaround for breakdowns and maintenance”.
