Adams & Adams’ Anti‑Counterfeiting Team has recently conducted another successful major operation targeting the manufacture, production, and distribution of counterfeit engine and gearbox lubricants in South Africa.

Following an extensive investigation, the team collaborated with a specialised unit of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to execute a search‑and‑seizure warrant at the premises of a well‑established illegitimate manufacturing facility specialising in counterfeit lubricant and oil products.

The operation resulted in the seizure of more than 20 000 litres of counterfeit oil, illegally decanted into well‑known lubricant brands’ 210L and 20L drums. Authorities also confiscated manufacturing equipment, raw materials, loose packaging, and various items used in the counterfeiting process. These counterfeit products were being supplied to unsuspecting retailers and end‑users, posing serious risks to vehicle owners, machinery, and the broader automotive industry.

Criminal and civil proceedings against the suspects are currently underway.

The success of this operation highlights the critical importance of intelligence‑driven enforcement strategies in identifying, disrupting, and prosecuting organised counterfeiting networks operating within the lubricant sector and other high‑risk product categories.

Adams & Adams urges consumers and businesses to purchase lubricants and related products only from reputable, authorised retailers. Anyone who encounters suspicious products or activities that may indicate the manufacture or distribution of counterfeit goods is encouraged to contact the firm’s Anti‑Counterfeiting Team.
