Additives protect gears in industrial transmissions

Industrial equipment supplier BMG has introduced the Cera Tec high performance additives to its range of industrial lubricants. The additives offer significant resistance to high temperature and pressure, effectively protecting gears in various sectors, including sugar mills, mining, chemical plants, manufacturing, and general engineering.

Developed by oils, lubricants and additives specialist Liqui Moly, Cera Tec is a micro-ceramic solid lubricant suspension based on hexagonal boron nitride (BN) in selected base oils. The lubricant reduces friction and protects the engine and transmission from wear, extending service life of assemblies, says BMG power transmission, agricultural, automotive and lubrication divisions business development manager Carlo Beukes.

Additionally, Cera Tec improves industrial equipment reliability, lowers engine and transmission noise, minimises maintenance requirements, and reduces downtime. Other benefits include energy savings, reduced contamination risk, lower pollutant emissions and more efficient operating costs, he adds.

The graphite-like structure of resilient ceramic particles, with high mechanical and thermal stability, fill in the roughness in the metal of oil-lubricated engines, transmissions, pumps and compressors, preventing direct metal-on-metal contact.

An active chemical uses existing friction energy to ensure a smooth-running effect that reduces fuel consumption in gasoline and diesel engines. The 0.5 µm particle size guarantees optimum filter flow properties and prevents solid lubricant particle deposits. Further, Cera Tec is miscible with all industrial oils, Beukes explains.

BMG specialists note that local operators encounter continuing difficulties with transmissions, such as those in conveyor systems, where dust accumulation in the transmission increases gear friction and subsequent wear.

High ambient temperatures further exacerbate these problems by raising transmission oil temperatures, risking inadequate lubrication and excessive wear.

“Experts have proven that with the inclusion of Cera Tec additives in transmission oil, the temperature of the transmission oil decreases by up to 15 °C. This solution not only offers better protection for machines, but also reduces the risk of malfunctions and lowers maintenance costs,” says BMG.

The company emphasises that maintaining optimal performance of industrial gearboxes is crucial for efficient motor speed control in various applications.

Without regular lubrication, friction would affect integral parts of the gearbox, which compromises efficiency, resulting in failure. Regular lubrication cools internal components and protects metal from corrosion, reducing system wear.

BMG’s range of energy-efficient products, including synthetic oils, lubricants, and bespoke lubrication systems, supported by a technically competent team, ensures efficient maintenance, extended life of components and energy savings at every plant.
