AI, automation optimise high-temperature work environment

LADLE FURNACE The automation upgrades at JSW’s meltshop will increase production consistency, improve product quality, enhance operational efficiency and reduce production-related costs
Metal production technologies company Primetals Technologies has been awarded a contract by steel producer JSW Steel Salem Works to implement advanced process optimisation solutions at the Salem plant in Tamil Nadu state, India.
The digitalisation project includes the installation of comprehensive Level-2 process automation systems at the meltshop and casting areas.
These upgrades will increase JSW Steel Salem’s production consistency, improve product quality, enhance operational efficiency and reduce production-related costs.
Automated Plant Operation
The scope of supply covers advanced process automation systems for the entire meltshop, including four ladle furnaces, two vacuum degassers, two energy optimisation furnaces, and two three-strand bloom casters, which will enable autonomous operation, minimise manual operator input and stabilise the production process through metallurgical models and dynamic process control systems.
The intuitive user interface and well-balanced operator guidance will ensure consistent, reproducible results, while the operator guidance feature is based on standardised production processes and “meticulous calculations” of all process steps, including cyclic online calculation of key process parameters such as steel grade, slag composition and temperature.
A Leading Integrated Steel Producer
JSW Steel is one of India’s leading integrated steel producers with a crude steel production of 35.7-million tonnes a year. With a strong global presence, JSW Steel is known for its innovative and sustainable approach to steelmaking and offers a diverse range of products including flat and long steel products.
