Applications for Round 31 of Western Australia's Exploration Incentive Scheme's (EIS's) co-funded exploration drilling programme and Series 8 of the energy analysis programme opened on Monday.

Venture 2 of the co-funded geophysics programme, which supports mineral exploration, is also now accepting applications from explorers with granted tenements and greenfield projects in the northern half of the state.

Several companies that participated in Venture 1 of the co-funded geophysics programme – including Dreadnought Resources, Black Canyon, and Sipa Resources – have reported encouraging outcomes from their completed projects. Geophysical survey results have assisted these companies in refining exploration techniques, improving geological understanding, and identifying high-potential target areas to accelerate discovery efforts.

The Gascoyne region has emerged as a promising hub for rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals, with the EIS backing several projects in recent rounds. Notable discoveries from co-funded drilling Rounds 28 and 29 include Rincon Resources' Kiwirrkurra project in the West Arunta region, which has identified geophysical anomalies prospective for niobium and REE mineralisation. Reverse circulation drilling has confirmed significant total rare earth oxides mineralisation at multiple prospects, prompting further exploration.

Meanwhile, Kingfisher Mining's Mick Well project and Dreadnought Resources' Mangaroon project have delivered significant REE results, with Dreadnought also confirming niobium mineralisation at its Stinger and Rocky Road prospects.

Applications for Round 31 of the drilling programme, Venture 2 of the geophysics programme, and Series 8 of the energy analysis programme will close at 16:00 on February 28.

Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael said the Cook government’s continued support for the EIS would drive exploration activity and job creation across Western Australia, particularly in regional areas.

"The Cook government's ongoing support of the Exploration Incentive Scheme will increase exploration opportunities and help create jobs across the state, especially in our regional communities," he said.

"The EIS programme continues to drive discoveries of critical minerals, supporting the Western Australian government's long-term goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

"WA is a world leader in mineral exploration, so it is pleasing to see the positive results and critical mineral discoveries achieved by successful applicants from previous rounds."
