ARDUOUS TASK

China’s special climate envoy, Xie Zhenhua, reports that the country will need nearly $19-trillion of investment to ensure a peak in the country’s emissions by 2030 and to reduce them to net-zero by 2060. China is the world’s biggest emitter, but also has the world’s largest solar and wind power fleets. “It is not easy to reach peak carbon emission within seven years and achieve carbon neutrality 30 years after that while ensuring economic safety,” Xie said at a recent conference. “It requires extremely arduous effort.” Photograph: Bloomberg
