Earlier this month electrification and automation product supplier ElectroMechanica (EM) extended their portfolio with the launch of the high-performance and cost-effective Delta MVF23/MVF20 series medium-voltage variable-speed drives (VSDs).

The launch comes at a time when the electric industry faces an influx of counterfeit products, which is compromising the quality of VSDs.

“Quality is key, but the challenge is that there are many options in the market. And to really separate what is good quality and what's not has become a serious challenge that we all face,” says EM business development head Rikus Botha.

He adds that the Delta Electronics MV VSDs are designed and manufactured to order with customer- and application-specific requirements in mind, making the offering more cost effective than other standard offers in the market.

Botha tells Engineering News that the Delta MVF23/MVF20 series offers advanced flux-oriented vector control techniques, with or without the use off-speed sensors. The drives’ high-speed accuracy and fast dynamic response against load fluctuation are suitable for different types of motor loads.

He mentions that the versatility within the functional control and protection allows for easy integration with field devices in new and existing systems.

“The compact footprint of the MVF23/MVF20 series makes the challenge of finding space to fit a VSD in a new or existing medium-voltage room or mobile containerised substation a thing of the past. The series requires no rear or side entry to perform repairs or maintenance, which means the solution can be installed against walls or placed back-to-back to optimise space,” adds Botha.

Botha explains that the proven Cascaded H-bridge topology and switching technology employed in the MV VSD solution enables near-sinusoidal output motor waveforms, reducing motor losses, vibrations, torque pulses and overheating.

“Their capability ensures that the MV VSD solution is widely suitable to be matched with new or existing induction, slip-ring or synchronous motors in retro-fit applications where Direct-On-Line systems are converted. They are also designed to save energy and increase efficiency,” he says.

He mentions that applying a VSD to both variable torque, such as pumps, fans and compressors, and constant torque motor loads, such as conveyors and mills, has the potential to result in energy savings, as well as productivity improvements.

“All MV VSD solutions are individually tested to 100% load and capacity, and according to the relevant end-user standards in Delta’s state-of-the-art MV factory and testing facility in Jiangsu, China. EM also invites customers to attend factory acceptance tests or facilitate attendance virtually,” he concludes.
