Australian mining company Burgundy Diamond Mines has announced encouraging results from its ongoing drilling programme at the Misery underground mine in Canada, suggesting the potential for an extended mine life beyond the initially planned 2026 closure date.

CEO Kim Truter stated that the Misery pipe, known for its high-value ore, appears poised to remain productive well past the original schedule. This optimism stems from drilling results that indicate the kimberlite pipe contact has been intersected earlier than anticipated in all completed drill holes targeting the Misery Main orebody extension.

Drilling activities began in July, with six of the planned 32 drill holes now completed. Notably, during the first drill hole (MDC-77), Burgundy’s drill crew discovered a fancy yellow diamond in the core – about 25 m below the last planned mining level and outside the previously modelled orebody extent.

Looking ahead, Burgundy plans to initiate drilling and bulk sampling of the south-west extension to the Main orebody in the fourth quarter.

Additionally, the company announced a postponement of the Sable underground project and its associated development capital by at least one year owing to a projected surplus of ore availability.
