Name of the Project
Capanema maximisation project.

Location
Minas Gerais state, Brazil.

Project Owner/s
Vale SA.

Project Description
The project entailed the reactivation of the Capanema mine, which had been inactive for 22 years, the implementation of a long-distance conveyor belt and adjustments to the storage and loading yard at the Timbopeba rail terminal.

Capanema will operate using natural moisture, without water in mineral processing and without generating tailings, eliminating the need for a dam. The new model also includes five autonomous off-road trucks and circularity solutions, such as the reprocessing of iron-ore contained in an old waste pile.

The mine will add about 15-million tons a year to Vale’s iron-ore production, contributing to the company’s guidance of 340-million to 360-million tons a year in 2026.

Potential Job Creation
The construction lasted five years, involved about 40 companies and more than  6 000 workers at peak activity, with a focus on hiring local labour. The operation employs 800 people.

Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
About R$5.2-billion was invested in reactivating the unit.

Planned Start/End Date
Vale inaugurated the Capanema mine in September 2025.

Latest Developments
